People Strategy

The People Strategy provides multilingual and culturally appropriate support to families and individuals of all ages to build on their assets and strengths to become self-sufficient and achieve their goals. The strategies target five areas which include health, kindergarten readiness, continuous academic success, college and career readiness, and promoting self-sufficiency.

Sunset Area residents

Health services

  • Mental & Physical Health Services
HealthPoint will provide dental and health services for all ages. Health services include behavioral health, naturophathic medicine, nutrition, diabetes education, family planning, and immunizations. Valley Medical Center will provide services including medical, surgical, 24-hour emergency care, and specialized services. Rotary Care Clinic will be available to those without insurance.
  • Community Health Events & Programs
UW Medicine/Valley Medical Center will provide Community Programs that include resources, education, screenings, and community support networks.
  • Substance Abuse Prevention
Neighborhood House will expand their Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to the Sunset Area, which will provide health and wellness workshops for the community.
  • Domestic Violence (DV) Assistance
A DV Advocate will serve the Sunset Area following up with reported cases to the Renton Police Department and help those appropriately respond to domestic violence situations.
  • Senior Information & Assistance Services
Multilingual Case Managers will work to connect seniors to medical, social, and other resources to keep them healthy and independent.
  • Food Access
Renton Salvation Army will provide a range of services to address food access needs. They will also conduct senior home visits to provide nutrition information.
  • Caregiver Support
A caregiver support program will provide unpaid caregivers counseling, support groups, workshops and classes as well as address health, self-sufficiency, and family needs.
  • Sunset Shuttle
A shuttle will be available to Sunset Area residents and will include runs to Renton Salvation Army, Valley UW Medicine/Medical Center, HealthPoint, Neighborhood House, and other residential locations.

Kindergarten Ready services

  • Education Services
Meadow Crest Early Learning Center provides high-quality preparatory programs in literacy, physical and social-emotional development, and numeracy.
  • Education Navigator
Renton School District will provide an Education Navigator to help families successfully transition into Kindergarten by assisting with enrollment, introductions to teachers and staff at their new school, and teaching them ways they can support their child’s learning.

Renton Technical College will provide an Open Doors Program which will serve youth who have not been successful in traditional school environment, pairing them with a case manager and college navigator who will provide career counseling, technical assistance and support in earning a high school equivalency certificate, identifying career goals, applying for college admissions and financial aid, and beginning a program of study.
  • College Readiness Support
Youth will have access to services that help with the college enrollment process including career and educational pathway exploration, identifying schools to apply to and classes/prerequisites to take, completing college and entrance exams, applying for financial aid and more.

Self-Sufficiency

  • Housing & Homeownership Assistance
Multilingual Case Managers will offer a range of support to address needs such as weatherization, utility assistance, and tenant rights as well as referrals to housing and home-ownership programs.
  • Employment Services
Multilingual Case Managers will help residents assess their skills by developing an Individual Employment Plan with short and long-term goals. Residents will also be assisted with finding employment or connected to adult education to meet their needs.
  • Adult Education
Centro Rendu will provide classes targeting Spanish speaking residents including parenting classes, ESL, ABE and the Plaza Communitarias Program. Employment services will assist low income residents start/advance into healthcare careers.
  • Entrepreneur Classes
The Renton Chamber of Commerce will provide business classes to residents for those who are new to business and for existing business owners.
  • Sunset Shuttle
Neighborhood House will provide a Sunset Shuttle that will be available to residents with limited access to transportation. The shuttle will connect residents to employment and job training resources at WorkSource Renton, Centro Rendu, and Renton Technical College.

Sunset Children’s Zone

The Sunset Children’s Zone is based on the Harlem Children’s Zone model which uses a cradle to career approach. The Sunset Children’s Zone will develop an educational pipeline that begins at birth and helps children every step of the way until college graduation through exceptional education, social services, family support, health, and community-building programs.
